The Warm Embrace of Family, Coffee, and Cherished Memories: Honoring my mother's memory this Fall

The Warm Embrace of Family, Coffee, and Cherished Memories: Honoring my mother's memory this Fall

There's something special about that Aroma

There’s something special about sharing a warm cup of coffee as the seasons change. For me, the scent of freshly brewed coffee mingling with crisp fall air conjures memories of family gatherings and moments of togetherness. It’s more than just the taste—it’s the comfort, the warmth, and the bond that forms around the table. As autumn approaches in New York, the idea of sharing these moments becomes even more meaningful.

My mother, Sherry, taught me the value of family, community, and the simple joy of sipping coffee together. My mother had a knack for bringing people together, often over a perfectly brewed pot and board games on the family dinner table. Whether it was family, friends, or even neighbors, her kitchen was a gathering place too, especially during the cooler months. As fall arrives with its vibrant foliage and chill, I can’t help but remember the countless cups of coffee we shared and the conversations that came with them.

Autumn Morning Coffee and Baked Apple Crisp

One of my favorite fall traditions in New York was gathering at the dinner table with a fresh cup of coffee, playing board games, and savoring the scent of baked apple crisp wafting from the kitchen. My mother was known for her cooking and baking, but fall was when she truly shined as a host. During my early 20s, I worked for a big coffee company and still lived with my sister, Ashley, and my mom. She would spend hours in the kitchen, whipping up treats, and we were always eager to enjoy the delicious results. Naturally, I took care of supplying the coffee, and I did so generously! In our home, baked goods and warm coffee in the evening were more than just a tradition—they were a cherished routine that brought us all together. Oh! there was apple pie too!

Coffee by the Bonfire at Uncle Joe's house

As the days get shorter and evenings grow cooler, there’s nothing quite like gathering around a bonfire. The crackling of the fire, the scent of burning wood, and the glow of warm light create the perfect ambiance for storytelling and reminiscing. My Uncle Joe always made sure there was a pot of coffee ready for these gatherings. Uncle Joe is one of my mother's younger brothers. She had six in total! Coffee always sealed the night and secured our bellies full from hotdogs and hamburgers by the fire. Coffee was the warm cup in our laps to stay warm when the wind would blow the fire crackly the other way. Coffee became a symbol of hospitality and connection. Especially in my mother's home and her brother's. As we sipped our drinks during these evenings together, the conversations often turned to memories, both joyful and bittersweet, reminding us of the strength and importance of family and fire get togethers.

The Importance of Community and Togetherness

Coffee, for many of us, is more than just a beverage—it’s a symbol of connection. In a world that often feels fast-paced and disconnected, taking time to sit down with a loved one over a warm cup of coffee can feel like a pause button on life. It’s a moment to check in, to listen, and to be present. My mother understood this deeply and made it a point to prioritize these moments. She showed me that community isn’t just about the people we know; it’s about nurturing relationships and making space for each other in our busy lives.

As we approach the fall season in New York, let’s embrace the simple joys of sharing coffee, whether it’s with family, friends, or neighbors. The memories we create around the warmth of a cup can last a lifetime, becoming stories we pass down through generations. In honor of my mother, Sherry, may we continue to gather, share, and cherish these moments, one cup at a time.
